Introduction to Machine Sewing - 3 hour class

Come and learn to sew in our beautiful studio in the Scottish Borders. With excellent Brother Innov-Is 15 sewing machines, overlockers and a fully equipped sewing studio. In this short introductory course, you will start from scratch, get to know the sewing machine and make a range of samples which cover valuable techniques. This course is a good stepping stone to our other more in-depth classes and will allow you to progress to beginners dressmaking courses.
Your tutor Jenny has 15 years of teaching experience, a First Class degree in Design for Textiles and a Post Graduate Diploma in Art and Design Education. Class sizes are kept to a maximum of 6 students so you will have lots of individual tuition and support.
Who is this course for?
This course is for you if you have never used a sewing machine, or have not sewn for a long time. We will cover the basics from setting up your machine, winding bobbins and practising stitching on scrap fabric before moving onto making a range of samples in cotton calico.
Please note this course is for over 16s only, however I will be offering adult and child classes shortly, please email if you are interested in this.
What will I learn?
How to safely and confidently set up and use one of our Brother sewing machines (you are welcome to bring your own machine if you discuss this with me in advance)
How to control the machine and sew and finish seams
Which fabrics to use and how to cut fabric correctly using the grain
You will then work through making a range of samples which cover essential sewing skills, depending on the pace you work at, these will include :
Adding a zip and finish with top stitching
Sew straight and curved seams
Finishing a simple hem
Finishing a hem using bias binding
Adding elastic in a casing
What will I make?
You will work through different samples using cotton calico
What is included?
Use of our fully equipped sewing studio, sewing machines and overlockers
Each table is set up with a sewing kit which you can use during the course
All fabric, trimmings and thread needed to make your samples
Tea, coffee and biscuits!
What do I need to bring?
Nothing! All materials are included in the cost of this course.

Price is inclusive of tax. All classes to be paid for in advance and processed through the website securely using Stripe - we do not access your bank details. When booking a class, you consent to receiving emails from Bonnay Studio - you can opt out at any time.
You can cancel or amend your booking up to 48 hours after placing the booking. After this, cancellations are not permitted - you may be able to transfer to an alternative date with plenty of notice but please be mindful that we are a small business with small class sizes so may not be able to accommodate this.
If we have to cancel a class, we will give you as much notice as possible and will offer an alternative date or a full refund.
